History

The Torrington and District Agricultural Society started up in February 1974. The project of the Society was to build a new arena and curling rinks. In October 1974, the members decided to build a 120x220 foot steel framed complex. In November 1978, erection of this building began. Figure skating and Minor hockey began using this facility in late 1979. Artificial ice was installed on the skating rink side in the mid-1980s. Over time, bleachers, heaters and air exchange system were completed to make this a functional multisport complex. In 2001, the Torrington Arena was renamed The Ron Gorr Memorial Arena in memory of Ron Gorr.

Many children in the area practiced their skating and hockey skills on the ice. The two curling sheets provide the opportunity for a local curling square draw and bonspiels. The upstairs hall facility is used for community banquets and functions. The Arts and Crafts room provides meeting facilities for the Lions and houses the Community Library (started by the Wellness Center, and supported by the Marigold Library System). During the off-season, the skating ice area has been home to the Old Tyme Music Jamboree, the Lions Bull & Bash, and the Torrington Gun Show as well as school reunions and other large gatherings. The Arena continues to be operated and maintained by the Torrington and District Agricultural Society.
